Digital surveillance: Cops trained in drone technology

The Himachal Pradesh Police, under the leadership of DGP Atul Verma, organised a 10-day drone operations training programme at their headquarters in Shimla. The event was aimed at equipping police personnel with advanced drone technology skills.

Due to heavy rain and fog in Shimla, the venue for three-day training programme was shifted to Kolar in Sirmaur district. The closing demonstration of the training took place at the Police Lines at Bharari here on August 17. DIG (Traffic, Tourist, and Railway) Gurdev Chand Sharma presided over the event.

Additional SP Narvir Rathour said, “The Himachal Police’s proactive approach in training its personnel in drone technology underscores increasing reliance on advanced tools to enhance law enforcement capabilities.”

He said, “The integration of drones into civil policing is more than just a technological upgrade; it represents a fundamental shift in how law enforcement agencies can respond to and manage a wide range of situations, from routine surveillance to complex disaster management.”

He added, “As drones continue to evolve and their applications in policing expand, they will play an increasingly vital role in ensuring public safety and maintaining order. This initiative by the Himachal Pradesh Police not only sets a precedent for other states to follow but also aligns with the broader national vision of leveraging technology for smarter and more efficient governance.”

The DGP said that drones enhanced the ability of the law enforcement agencies to monitor large areas in real-time, allowing for efficient patrolling in urban and rural settings. “During events or protests, drones provide an aerial view, enabling the police to manage crowds, detect potential threats and deploy forces more effectively. Drones also play a crucial role in monitoring borders and coastlines, detecting unauthorised activities and preventing illegal crossings or smuggling,” he added.

Verma said, “Drones can capture high-resolution images and videos of accident scenes, providing accurate documentation for investigation and legal proceedings. Aerial footage from drones offers a comprehensive view of crime scenes, helping investigators gather evidence and reconstruct events.”

He added, “Drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras can locate missing persons in disaster-stricken areas or difficult terrains. After natural disasters, drones help in assessing the extent of damage to infrastructure, enabling the authorities to plan relief operations more efficiently.”

Minimise risk during hazardous situations

• Drones assist in monitoring traffic flow, identifying bottlenecks and ensuring smooth vehicular movement, especially during peak hours or emergencies, said the DGP
• They are also used to detect illegal activities such as unauthorised mining, deforestation and encroachments
• Drones minimise risk to police personnel by allowing them to monitor hazardous situations from a safe distance, such as during natural disasters, riots or dangerous criminal operations
