Disaster risk reduction takes centre stage in Mandi
Street plays highlight disaster preparedness & safety measures
As part of the Samarth-2025 Campaign, a series of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) awareness programmes were organised across various locations in Mandi district, including Sundernagar, Dhanotu, Thunag and Gohar. The events were held under the aegis of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Mandi, in collaboration with the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR).
At Sundernagar, awareness programmes were conducted at Jawahar Park (Community Building Complex) and Dhanotu. On this occasion, artistes from Jalpa Kala Manch, affiliated with the DIPR, presented thought-provoking street plays and musical performances to educate the public about disaster preparedness and safety measures. Through their engaging theatrical acts, the artistes highlighted the importance of safe construction practices, fire safety, earthquake response techniques and ways to minimise damage during natural calamities.
The performances also emphasised avoiding construction near rivers and streams and adhering to the guidelines issued by local authorities during emergencies. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from local residents, who appreciated the creative approach to spreading awareness about disaster risk reduction.
Similarly, under the same campaign, DRR awareness programmes were organised in Thunag subdivision and Chachyot tehsil. The activities were conducted at Gram Panchayats Saroa and Dhishti, as well as at ITI-Bagsyad and Thunag market area.
In Thunag, the awareness drive featured lively performances by artistes from Hari Om Kala Manch and Amar Yuvak Mandal, who conveyed crucial information on disaster preparedness through street plays and folk songs. Their performances underlined the importance of constructing earthquake-resistant buildings, remaining vigilant during fire incidents and adopting safety measures to mitigate risks from various natural disasters.
A key message conveyed during the plays was to avoid building houses near vulnerable riverbanks and to strictly follow administrative directions during disaster situations.
The programmes saw active participation from ITI Principal NN Rao, up-pradhan Thunag panchayat Khem Singh and local residents.
