The 1 HP Air Squadron NCC, Kullu, successfully concluded its 10-day Annual Training Camp (ATC-192) from June 17 to 26 at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi. With the enthusiastic support of the IIT Mandi administration, the camp brought together 454 cadets from 14 schools and two colleges across Himachal Pradesh. The sprawling, tech-driven campus transformed into a vibrant ground for cadets to hone their discipline, leadership and teamwork.

Wing Commander Kunal Sharma, Commanding Officer of the squadron, stated that the camp aimed to foster leadership qualities and camaraderie among cadets. Each day commenced with brisk drills and physical training, followed by tent-pitching exercises and live range firing, helping cadets test their endurance and precision. Aeromodelling workshops offered insights into flight mechanics, while campus treks across Mandi’s hilly terrain challenged physical stamina and mental resilience.

A standout feature of ATC-192 was a three-day Service Selection Board (SSB) workshop led by Group Captain Naval Saini (Retd). Through lectures on communication skills, personality development and mock interviews, cadets received a clear picture of defence selection processes. Many found the sessions eye-opening, especially the candid feedback which helped build their self-confidence.

The cadets were further inspired by interactions with decorated officers. Wing Commander Isha, who led the IAF’s all-women contingent in the 2015 Republic Day Parade, shared her story of grit and growth in a male-dominated field. Wing Commander Pranav Arya and Capt Kunal Sagar offered inside perspectives on Operation Sindoor and the intense life of India’s armoured forces. In a significant announcement, Dr Arvind Keprate from Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway, pledged an annual scholarship of Rs 1,00,000 for three years to deserving cadets for advanced SSB coaching. The motivational component continued with Prof Laxmidhar Behera, Director of IIT Mandi, delivering an inspiring talk based on the Bhagavad Gita, while Dr Rajnish from PHC Kataula trained cadets in emergency medical response and CPR. The Himachal Homeguard Department capped off training with disaster and rescue management drills.

ATC-192 was more than just drills and workshops — it was a celebration of inclusivity and aspiration. Five students from the Kullu Orphanage were specially invited to join the camp, receiving exposure to academic and career avenues. Cadets toured cutting-edge research labs, celebrated International Yoga Day and engaged in spirited sports competitions.
