A team of doctors and supporting staff has given a new lease of life to a 62-year-old woman by performing a complicated three-hour-long surgery.
Radical Nephrectomy (kidney cancer) surgery is largely believed to only be possible in premier health institutions like PGI or IGMC (Shimla). Recently, this complicated surgery was successfully performed by a team of doctors led by Dr Praveen Sharma at the Nurpur civil hospital.
After eight days of hospitalisation, the patient was discharged on Monday after receiving post-surgery Histopathological Examination Report (HPE) from the LPL National Reference Laboratory, Delhi on January 25.
The HPE report confirmed the complete removal of the cancerous kidney tumor from the patient’s body with Radical Nephrectomy. This was the first surgery of its kind performed at the Nurpur civil hospital. The elderly patient availed the ‘cashless surgery expenses’ under the Himcare health card scheme. As per information, the patient visited the hospital’s surgeon after suffering from abdominal pain. Ultrasound and CT scans revealed that she was suffering from Carcinoma, an early stage of cancer, in the left kidney. According to the surgeon, the early stage of cancer in the kidney could be cured with Radical Nephrectomy. Medical Superintendent Dr. Neerja Gupta congratulated the team of doctors. The surgeon and his team had performed major surgeries like Gastrojejunostomy and Cyst gastrostomy successfully last year, she added.
