In a heartfelt and inspiring address at the Government Senior Secondary School, Lakkar Bazar, Shimla, Additional District Magistrate (Protocol) Jyoti Rana expressed serious concern over the rising trend of drug abuse among young people. Rana was speaking as the chief guest at the event organised for the constitution of the school’s Student Council. Addressing the students, she remarked that girls today are setting inspiring examples in every field and that the government’s initiatives for women empowerment are showing promising results. However, she noted that the challenges faced by women are also evolving with time. Among these, drug addiction has emerged as one of the most pressing issues, affecting not only boys but a growing number of girls as well.

She encouraged students to set clear goals early in life and dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to achieving them. Emphasising the impact of technology and social media, she advised the students to be vigilant against the rising threat of cybercrime. While acknowledging the power of social platforms, she reminded the students to use them responsibly and constructively.

The event also marked the formal announcement of the Student Council for the academic session. Class XII student Tamanna was named as the Head Girl, while Aditi of Class XI was appointed Vice Head Girl. Four student houses were also restructured, and each was assigned new captains and vice captains. Furthermore, student leaders were selected for various committees, including discipline, sports, and cultural activities.

ADM Rana congratulated all the newly elected student leaders and encouraged them to serve as role models for their peers. She praised the school’s effort in nurturing leadership among students and reminded them that determination, discipline and positive choices will lead them to success. The event concluded with enthusiastic applause from students and staff, marking a memorable day of inspiration and new beginnings.
