Dust & disturbance: Villagers oppose new dumping site

Residents of Banuradu village in Baghni panchayat of Dharamsala, are facing sleepless nights due to a newly established dumping and loading site located next to their homes. The site has caused significant disturbances, with the area becoming heavily polluted by dust, and the constant movement of heavy machinery, vehicles, tractors, loaders and tippers round-the-clock, which has become a major nuisance for the locals.

The matter has been reported to the panchayat and other law enforcing agencies for immediate action. Col HS Mankotia, an 85-year-old retired soldier who had built his house to enjoy a peaceful retirement after his long military service, is among those unable to accept the situation. He questions how such a noisy and disruptive operation could be approved by the government.

The narrow countryside road, regularly used by these heavy vehicles, has suffered damage, including the side drains. A resident, speaking anonymously, said, “The constant flow of vehicles to and from the site is not only disruptive but also poses a serious safety risk to commuters.”

The constant noise and unruly behaviour of the drivers have also caused frustration among the local women, while the dust from the sand, gravel and bricks being loaded and unloaded near residential areas has raised health concerns. The incessant movement of these heavy vehicles is a major disturbance for the elderly, critically ill patients and students in the area.
