The 133 Eco Task Force, dedicated to environmental protection in Himachal Pradesh, has emerged as a major force in conservation and afforestation. Since its inception, the unit has planted more than 6.076 million saplings, covering 5,675 hectares across the state. It has also developed 11 nurseries with a combined capacity of 430,000 plants, while rejuvenating three Amrit Sarovars and several ponds.
Over the past 19 years, the force has made remarkable strides not only in afforestation but also in soil conservation, disaster management, and protection of natural resources. According to Col. Deepak Kumar, Commanding Officer of the 133 Eco Task Force, the unit operates on a unique model that engages ex-servicemen. Re-inducted into service as part of a small Army Corps Group, they are entrusted with crucial environmental responsibilities.
In the last five years alone, the Eco Task Force has successfully controlled 43 forest fire incidents and enhanced fire prevention through fire lines in 42 project areas. To further aid water conservation, it has built 11 check dams using locally available materials.
The unit organises special plantation drives during significant events such as Van Mahotsav, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, Meri Maati Mera Desh, Swachhata Hi Seva and International Yoga Day. Alongside plantation, its ongoing efforts include safeguarding flora and fauna, preserving water resources and promoting soil stability.
Beyond conservation, the Eco Task Force has also provided shelter, food, and transport to people affected by natural disasters—strengthening its dual commitment to environmental protection and humanitarian service.
