ED official accused in CBI graft case nabbed by Panchkula police for extortion
An Enforcement Directorate (ED) Assistant Director, who is accused in a CBI graft case, has been arrested by the Panchkula police on extortion charges. It is alleged that a gangster was threatening the family of the CBI complainant on behalf of the ED official. The accused ED official, Vishal Deep, was brought to Panchkula from Mumbai by the police for questioning on Thursday and was arrested today.
CBI complainant Rajnish Bansal’s brother Vikas Bansal had complained to the Panchkula police that he and his nephew (Rajnish’s son) were receiving calls and messages from one Rohit Gujjar, who was threatening to kill his family, if he failed to pay Rs 50 lakh extortion.
According to the complaint, on January 3, Rajnish’s son Mannat, received a threatening WhatsApp call from an individual claiming to be Rohit Gujjar, a member of the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi Gang. The caller warned Mannat to halt the ongoing actions of his family, while threatening harm to him and his family. Mannat, alarmed by the threat, immediately informed his family. After this, Vikas also received threatening messages and calls on WhatsApp from Gujjar, who demanded Rs 50 lakh from him. The caller also sent disturbing messages, including details about the family’s residence in Kurukshetra, Haryana.
The Panchkula police had initiated investigation into the matter and headed to Mumbai, where ED official was arrested by CBI’s Chandigarh team a few days ago and was released by a special court there. Officials of the Panchkula police brought him to the city on Thursday for interrogation in the matter raised by Vikas Bansal and subsequently arrested him. An FIR was registered against the ED Assistant Director under Sections 308 (2) and 308 (4) of the BNS at the Sector 14 police station in Panchkula. He was produced in the court of ACJM Rekha Sharma today from where he was sent to four-day police remand.
The CBI had already arrested ED Assistant Director’s brother Vikas Deep, a bank manager, in the graft case in December last year.
