Ensure 100 pc door-to-door waste collection in Nahan: NGT to admn

Rajwant Sandhu, Chairperson, Regional Monitoring Committee, North Zone, NGT, today directed the district administration of Sirmaur to ensure 100 per cent door-to-door collection of solid waste in the district.
While chairing a review meeting on the progress of solid waste management at Nahan, Sandhu expressed satisfaction over the work undertaken in the district and directed officials to select three places where solid waste collected from Nahan town could be segregated. She said the areas lying in the precincts of the town should not become hotspots of littering plastic waste.
She dwelt on the need of setting up mini waste collection centres at the panchayat level where plastic waste could be collected. The empty chemical drums from the agriculture and horticulture departments should not be used for storing water and food items and officials should sensitise the people about its ill-effects. She also directed officials that efforts should be made to rope in eco-clubs in schools to ensure disposal of waste generated in mid-day meals.
Deputy Commissioner, Sirmaur, RK Pruthi, while elaborating on the solid waste management plants in the district, said bio-degradable waste in Nahan was being sent to a compost plant while bailing machines had been installed for scientific disposal of the waste. About 7 tonne solid waste was collected on a daily basis from Nahan which comprised 4.25 tonne dry waste and 2.5 tonne wet waste. In Paonta Sahib, as much as 8.56 tonne waste per day was generated while in Rajgarh, about 0.6 tonne waste per day was generated.
The DC said land had been allocated for setting up a waste disposal plant at Rajgarh and it would be done soon.
