A penalty of Rs 500 has been imposed by the Arki MC on defaulter for violation of the rules while no other civic body has taken any step to check the wrong-doers.

Rajwant Sandhu, chairperson, state-level committee, National Green Tribunal (NGT), today directed the district administration to ensure door-to-door collection of waste as well as its segregation at source as per Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules 2016.

While in Solan, Baddi and Arki, 100 per cent door-to-door collection of waste has been initiated, it is yet to attain the optimum level in Nalagarh and Parwanoo. As far as the segregation of waste is concerned, barely 40 to 50 per cent was underway in the Solan Municipal Committee (MC), about 80 to 90 per cent in the Arki MC, 88 per cent in the Parwanoo MC, 60 per cent in the Baddi MC and 83.33 per cent in Nalagarh.

Besides, 330-kg single use plastic waste has been collected by the Arki civic body and handed over to Ambuja Cements Limited while in Solan 740 kg of plastic had been collected, of this 530 kg had been handed over to the PWD for road construction.

She said non-biodegradable waste should be disposed of scientifically while the immediate use of the organic waste should be devised. She also stressed that incinerators should be installed in hostels and hotels and children should be involved in plastic use activities while giving the example of Sirmaur district where they were involved in productive works. The administration should give incentives for such activities.

Sandhu also added that since Solan was a key industrial town, safe and scientific disposal of industrial waste should be planned.

The chief medical officer was also directed to ensure proper disposal of all bio-medical waste in hospitals. She also dwelt upon the need to create awareness about the safe and scientific disposal of solid waste management using low-cost technologies.

Lauding Arki and Parwanoo, she directed the officials to ensure that the SWM Rules were abided by optimally in all civic bodies .
