Ex-CM Thakur slams govt’s anniversary event in Mandi
Questions government’s priorities, alleging that many families were still awaiting adequate relief
Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur today sharply criticised the state government’s decision to hold a grand celebration in Mandi on December 11 to mark three years of the Congress regime. He said the festivities were insensitive at a time when the state was still grappling with the aftermath of the devastating monsoon disaster that claimed nearly 500 lives and left thousands homeless.
Speaking to the media, Thakur questioned the government’s priorities, alleging that many affected families were still awaiting adequate relief. “What exactly is the government celebrating? The people are still suffering and the relief work remains far from satisfactory,” he said. He urged the Congress leadership to cancel the event and focus instead on rehabilitation efforts, asserting that the current administration’s tenure had been “defined by failure and disappointment”.
The former CM also accused the government of attempting to delay the Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) elections due to fear of defeat. “Their efforts to postpone the elections show clear nervousness,” he remarked.
Thakur further sought clarity on disaster-related funds, stating that while the Centre had consistently supported Himachal Pradesh, including the Prime Minister’s recent announcement of Rs 1,500 crore, the state government must explain the utilisation of the Rs 5,500 crore already provided by the Union Government.
On the upcoming Assembly session, he said instead of focusing on its duration, the government should ensure meaningful discussions and satisfactory responses to issues raised by legislators. — TNS
