Celebrating Ramanujan’s legacy

  • India observes National Mathematics Day every year on December 22 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan
  • Declared in 2012, National Mathematics Day celebrates Ramanujan’s extraordinary contributions in the field and acknowledges the critical role mathematics plays in daily life, from solving everyday problems to addressing complex scientific challenges

The Department of Basic Sciences at Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, on Sunday hosted an expert lecture for its undergraduate and postgraduate students to mark National Mathematics Day.

The event featured Dr Shashi Kant Mishra, Senior Professor, Department of Mathematics, Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, as the distinguished guest speaker.

Dr Manish Sharma, Dean, College of Horticulture, was the chief guest at the event.

Dr Mishra, a recipient of numerous academic awards, is a member of the Board of Studies and Academic Council at several prominent universities in India.

During his lecture, titled “Optimisation Tools for Decision Making and the Application of Mathematics in Agricultural Sciences and Agribusiness Management”, Dr Mishra highlighted the rich history of mathematics in India, emphasising the importance of teamwork in mathematical pursuits and discussed the contributions of renowned mathematicians worldwide.

The session concluded with an engaging interactive discussion with students.

The event was organised by Dr Ashu Chandel and Dr Rakesh Gupta, who welcomed the guests and participants. The event was a fitting tribute to both the legacy of Ramanujan and the importance of mathematics in shaping diverse fields of study, including agriculture and agribusiness.
