First-ever robotic surgery performed at Tanda college

In a landmark achievement for healthcare in the region, the Department of Urology, Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, performed its first-ever robotic surgery today on a kidney cancer patient. This marks the beginning of advanced minimally invasive surgical care in the area.

The programme was virtually inaugurated by the Chief Minister, who lauded the team for bringing cutting-edge technology to the state. The surgery was performed on a female patient with a tumour involving nearly one-third of her left kidney. In a kidney-sparing procedure, the tumour was successfully removed while preserving the remaining healthy portion of the organ.

The surgical team included Dr Kulbhushan and Dr Angesh from the Urology Department, under the expert mentorship of Dr Dharmender Aggarwal, Senior Consultant, Fortis Hospital, Mohali, who has performed over 800 robotic surgeries.

The robotic surgical system, recently installed at the Tanda medical college, now brings high-end care to patients from Kangra and nearby regions who earlier had to travel to major cities like Chandigarh or Delhi for such procedures.

Robotic surgery offers faster recovery, minimal blood loss, and reduced hospital stays due to its precision and smaller incisions. Officials hope that this advancement would significantly benefit patients in Himachal Pradesh suffering from complex cancers and other challenging conditions.
