Water supply to Chamba town was disrupted on Tuesday due to overnight heavy rains that triggered a flashflood in Sal river. The intense downpour caused the river to swell dangerously, resulting in damage to key components of the Chamba Water Supply Scheme and forcing the authorities to cut the supply.
In a press communique, the Jal Shakti Department said the floodwaters caused significant damage to the water supply infrastructure, including pipelines and pumping systems. This has made it impossible to maintain the usual flow of water to households across Chamba. Engineers from the department are currently working on assessing the damage and have already initiated repair and restoration operations to bring the system back online at the earliest.
Officials said the restoration process would take some time, as the water level in the Sal River remains dangerously high. Given the severity of the situation and the ongoing Minjar Fair, which has led to increased demand and logistical challenges, the Jal Shakti Vibhag has announced that even after partial restoration, water supply will be available only once a day for the time being. This is a precautionary measure to ensure equitable distribution and to avoid further strain on the damaged infrastructure.
Residents of Chamba have been urged to remain patient and cooperate with the authorities during this difficult period. They are advised to conserve the water currently stored in their homes and to refrain from unnecessary usage until normal supply is resumed.
The department has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and assured citizens that every effort is being made to expedite repairs and resume full services as soon as possible. The situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be communicated to the public as the condition improves, they stated.
Meanwhile, citizens are encouraged to contact the relevant officials for any immediate concerns or queries related to the water supply disruption. The Jal Shakti Department has also reiterated the importance of maintaining calm and supporting the restoration efforts as the region continues to deal with the impact of heavy monsoon rains.
