“Forests are the backbone of our lives and saving them is like saving ourselves,” said MLA Kamlesh Thakur while inaugurating the 75th zonal level Van Mahotsav in the Dehra Assembly constituency today. She launched the Van Mahotsav by planting an amla sapling in Kallar. Jwalamukhi MLA Sanjay Rattan was also present on the occasion.
Kamlesh said, “Today, we all are breathing clean air, living in a clean environment and the credit for all this goes to our ancestors.” She underlined the responsibility of the present generation to ensure that future generations also breathe clean air. She appealed to people to save and increase forests.
Kamlesh said that a target to plant 2.50 lakh saplings in Dehra forest division had been given in this season. She added that saplings of different species would be planted in 300 hectares during this period. She instructed the Forest Department to speed up efforts to increase the green cover in Dehra and also involve general public in the campaign.
She handed over sewing machines and cheques worth Rs 4 lakh to four Village Forest Development Societies of Dehra under income generation activity under the JICA Project. Rattan said that plantation had special importance in the protection of the environment. He added that “in this era of climate change, we all should come forward to plant as many trees as possible. The state government is taking several initiatives under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to increase the forest area”.
