Former PM, Kangra ex-MP paid tributes
The Vidhan Sabha today paid glowing tributes to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and members of the House, who had passed away in the recent past.
“It is due to his farsightedness and vision that Himachal got several prestigious institutions, including Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College, Nerchowk, IIT-Mandi, IIIT-Una, Central University of Himachal Pradesh and the NIFT,” said Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in the Assembly. internationally renowned institutions had honoured Manmohan Singh for his exemplary work as an economist, politician and social worker.
Manmohan Singh had started MGNREGA to create livelihood, especially in rural areas. “It was Manmohan Singh who had started the practice of setting up technology-based institutions. It was in recognition of Manmohan Singh’s exemplary work that we have named the Himachal Pradesh Institute of Public Administration (HIPA) after him,” Sukhu said.
He also remembered former MP Kishan Kapoor, who had passed away recently. Kapoor became an MLA for the first time in 1990. “He will be remembered for his selfless service to the poor and downtrodden,” he added.
Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur also paid tributes to Manmohan Singh and said that he had impeccable integrity and was respected across the political spectrum. “Normally, Prime Ministers are politicians but he was one Prime Minister who had held the prestigious posts of RBI Chairman, Economic Adviser, Finance Minister,” he added.
Thakur was a humble, down to earth and modest person, who remained Prime Minister for 10 years and was honoured by globally acclaimed institutions. He also paid tributes to Kapoor and said that the latter had been MLA for five terms and the Lok Sabha MP from Kangra. “He was a leader with a clean image and had never hesitated to speak his mind. He will always be remembered by people for his services,” he added.
Agriculture Minister Chander Kumar, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dhani Ram Shandil, Town and Country Planning Minister Rajesh Dharmani and MLAs Vipin Parmar and Dr Janak Raj also paid tributes to Manmohan Singh and Kapoor.
