Sukhram travelled Mandi Parliamentary constituency, his home base, extensively for the 2019 Parliamentary elections while campaigning for his grandson Ashray Sharma, who lost the seat to Bharatiya Janata Party’s Ramswaroop Sharma.

A five-time legislator and a three-time parliamentarian, Sukhram represented Mandi in the Himachal assembly from 1963 until 1984, when he was elected to Parliament and served as minister of state for defence production and supplies, planning and food and civil supplies under former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. Sukh Ram later became Union minister of state (independent charge) for communications, a position he held from 1993 to 1996.
