The National Handloom Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Bhuttico auditorium in Kullu, in an event organised by the Weavers Service Centre, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The celebration drew a large gathering of weavers and Bhuttico employees, all coming together to honour India’s rich handloom legacy and the invaluable contributions of its weaving community.
Former minister and Chairman of Bhuttico, Satya Prakash Thakur, delivered an inspiring address, extending warm wishes to the weavers and expressing heartfelt appreciation for the continued support from the Weavers Service Centre, Shamshi, and the National Handloom Development Corporation. He highlighted the transformative impact of various government schemes that have empowered weavers both socially and economically.
“Today, Bhuttico weavers enjoy benefits such as paid holidays, post-retirement pensions, gratuity, and provident fund. These achievements are the result of collective discipline, dedication, and unity,” Thakur remarked. He also paid tribute to Late Vedram Thakur, the visionary founder of Bhuttico, whose leadership laid the foundation for the society’s success. Thakur proudly noted that Bhuttico has earned national and international recognition, creating a distinct identity in the handloom sector.
The theme of National Handloom Day 2025, “Weaving the Future,” was prominently reflected throughout the event. Thakur stressed the importance of sustainability, innovation, and design evolution in preserving the relevance of traditional handlooms. He urged consumers to support local artisans and understand the socio-economic value embedded in handloom products. He also reminded attendees that National Handloom Day commemorates the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, which elevated indigenous fabrics as symbols of resistance against colonial rule.
A touching highlight of the celebration was a performance by weaver Phoola Devi, who sang a song dedicated to women’s empowerment. Her heartfelt message resonated deeply with the audience, reinforcing the idea that women are the backbone of society and that national progress is impossible without their upliftment.
