From puzzles to CT: scans Sanjauli college explores maths in action

Aiming to ignite interest in mathematics beyond the classroom, the Department of Mathematics at the Centre of Excellence, Government Post Graduate College Sanjauli, launched a lecture series titled “Maths Revealed” on Thursday, focusing on real-world applications of mathematical concepts.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members of the department.

In his welcome address, Dr Girish Kapoor, head of the department, highlighted the purpose of the initiative, emphasising mathematics is not limited to theoretical learning. “This series will help students gain a deeper insight into how mathematical principles apply to the world around us,” he said.

The opening session, titled “a math puzzle that created brain scanning technology, CT scans”*, was delivered by Dr Anjana Sharma. Her talk explored advanced concepts such as transcendental functions and triangular numbers, and traced the mathematical roots of CT scan technology — even drawing connections to the game of bowling as part of the innovation’s origin story.

Dr Sharma’s engaging and accessible presentation struck a chord with the audience, making complex ideas relatable and sparking curiosity. The session concluded with a lively Q&A segment, with both students and faculty members actively participating.

The college principal, Bharti Bhagra, lauded the initiative, saying, “The ‘Maths Revealed’ lecture series is a commendable effort by the department of mathematics to promote awareness and appreciation of the subject. We look forward to future sessions that will further enrich our understanding of mathematics and its relevance in everyday life.”

The event marked a promising beginning to the series, with more sessions expected to follow in the coming months.
