From struggle to stability: Widow Remarriage Scheme changes lives

The ongoing efforts of the state government towards empowerment, dignity and self-reliance of women are steadily transforming lives. Among its notable welfare initiatives, the Widow Remarriage Scheme stands out as a compassionate step aimed at supporting widowed women, helping them regain stability and confidence as they rebuild their future.

The Department of Women and Child Development has been actively implementing the scheme during the financial year 2025-26, bringing renewed hope and security to several families. The government, acknowledging the importance of financial support in starting afresh, recently enhanced the grant amount to Rs 2 lakh for bona fide Himachali couples entering into remarriage.

As of September 2025, seven women from Mandi district have benefited from the scheme, each receiving Rs 2 lakh in assistance to ensure both economic security and social reintegration.

One of the beneficiaries, Homawati of Dhaban village in Balh subdivision, shared how the scheme transformed her life. After losing her father early, she worked hard to educate herself and trained in computer applications, tailoring and beauty care before starting her own parlour. It was when she lost her husband that she learned about the Widow Remarriage Scheme and applied for support. With the grant — Rs 1.20 lakh in a five-year fixed deposit and Rs 80,000 in cash — she expanded her business. “The Widow Remarriage Scheme has been a true blessing for women like me, helping us rebuild our lives with confidence,” she added.

Another beneficiary, Neelam Kumari from Sakroha village, also expressed gratitude after receiving Rs 2 lakh under the initiative. The funds, she said, helped her support the education and livelihood of her three daughters. For her, the scheme represents not just financial aid but also social acceptance and renewed self-respect.
