The Under-19 Girls’ Major Games Tournament for Solan district commenced at Government Senior Secondary School, Kanda, in Kasauli tehsil, on Sunday drawing enthusiastic participation from over 350 students representing 39 schools across the district.
The tournament is providing a vibrant platform for young athletes to showcase their sporting talent in a range of events. School Principal Meeta Kaul said the tournament has offered young girls an opportunity to display their abilities and sportsmanship. “The response has been overwhelming, with keen participation witnessed in the first three days,” she added. Competitions are being held in sports such as hockey, football, basketball, volleyball, taekwondo, judo, khurash and weightlifting.
Despite persistent rain throughout the day, the students’ enthusiasm remained undeterred. The outdoor games continued with zeal, while indoor events, including judo, khurash, weightlifting and taekwondo, went ahead without interruption.
To accommodate the large-scale event, the school improvised by converting staff rooms and rented panchayat spaces into sporting arenas. The school ground was also upgraded with new fencing and goalposts, enabling the successful conduct of the basketball tournament.
Principal Kaul shared that the school had revived its tradition of hosting sports tournaments in 2024.
