Gangath’s fading flame: The last sparks of a brass legacy
Gangath, a small town in the Indora assembly constituency of Kangra district, once echoed with the rhythmic clang of hammer on brass. Fondly known as 'Bhandian Wala Shahar,' this town was famous for its antique brass vessels-especially the 'Baltoi', 'Gaagar', and traditional buckets. Over four decades ago, Gangath thrived as a mini brass utensil industry, supplying handcrafted kitchenware across the region.
However, the advent of cheaper and more convenient stainless steel drastically changed consumer preferences. As steel utensils took over kitchens, the demand for brass vessels dwindled, causing many artisans to abandon their craft. Once home to a bustling market, Gangath's brass industry has now shrunk to just five active cottage units.
Despite the decline, the remaining artisans continue to make the iconic 'Baltoi'-a large brass vessel used to cook food during marriages, social, and religious gatherings. Valued for its excellent heat conduction and design, the Baltoi features a thick base and narrow opening, keeping food warm for hours when cooked over a traditional wood-fired trench. Crafted in two parts, these vessels are available in sizes ranging from 15 to 45 kg.
Prominent local traders Joginder Pal and Sunil Gupta highlight that, although the number of artisans has dropped to single digits, the demand for Baltois remains strong across Kangra district and even neighboring Punjab. They believe this heritage craft has long defined Gangath's identity and deserves recognition and revival.
Unfortunately, artisans voice frustration over the lack of government support and initiatives to sustain or promote this unique tradition. The remaining craftsmen strive to keep the legacy alive but struggle with limited resources and fading interest.
Gangath''s brassware tradition stands at a crossroads-where cultural pride meets economic challenge. Without timely intervention, a centuries-old craft may vanish, taking with it a vital piece of Himachal's artistic heritage.
