Additional Director of Higher Education and Professor Krishan Kumar Vaidya (retd) today said that global warming and climate change had become a major issue in India and across the world for the last few years. Prof Vaidya was here today to inaugurate a two-day international conference at Vallabh Government College, Mandi, on emerging issues of Biodiversity and Environment for Sustainable Development. More than 160 scientists, professors and researchers from the country and abroad are participating in the conference.
“For the last few years, significant change was being witnessed in climate change in India and around the world. Global warming is increasing constantly, which is posing a threat to glaciers. Last year during monsoon, Himachal had suffered immensely because of rain fury. Thereafter, December and January were completely dry. Thankfully, rainfall and snowfall occurred on January-end which provided relief,” he pointed out.
“Scientists have been warning us for the last many years but nothing has been done so far to deal with this issue effectively. What kind of good lifestyle we want to live at what cost. Scientists, professors and researchers are presenting research and observations on this issue. The final outcome of this conference will be submitted to the Government of India for further action,” he added.
He appreciated the efforts of Principal Vallabh Government College Mandi Surina Sharma in taking this initiative.
“Today, Dr Shashikant Bhatia, Associate Professor, Konkuk University, South Korea, presented an online research paper on the topic ‘Microbes for Sustainable Development. On this occasion, as keynote speaker, Professor MC Sidhu of Panjab University presented a research paper on the topic ‘Biodiversity and its conservation strategy’.
