Goddess Bhekhali’s palanquin journey begins

In a moment steeped in devotion and tradition, thousands of devotees of Sari Kothi today set out on a sacred pilgrimage from the Bhekhali temple, perched high above Akhara Bazar in Kullu, towards Kamand in Maharaja Kothi, Mandi. The purpose: to obtain consecrated wood, blessed by deity Parashar Rishi, for the construction of a new palanquin for Goddess Bhekhali.

This marks history in the making — the palanquin of Goddess Bhekhali, the presiding deity of Sari Kothi, is being rebuilt after a gap of 50 years. The ritual of procuring the sacred wood began with immense fervour as thousands of devotees, joined by representatives of nearly 10 other deities from Sari Kothi, made their way on foot through Dhalpur to Kamand.

Along the route, symbolic icons of the participating deities were carried with deep reverence, accompanied by traditional bands and the performance of ancient rituals. Priest Rakesh Sharma explained that the decision to rebuild the palanquin was taken during the auspicious month of Phalgun, when the Goddess herself, through divine indication, instructed her followers to begin this sacred undertaking. Preparations have been ongoing ever since, culminating in today’s grand procession.

Tomorrow, the devotees will return to the Bhekhali temple with the consecrated wood, paving the way for the new palanquin’s construction. For the people of Kullu, this is more than just a ritual—it is a renewal of faith. Goddess Bhekhali, revered as the Kul Devi of the erstwhile ruling family and guardian deity of Sari Kothi, occupies a central place in the valley’s spiritual life.

Her divine role extends to the world-famous International Dasehra Festival, where celebrations begin only after she waves the symbolic green flag from Bhekhali hill. Likewise, the chariot procession of Lord Raghunath at Dhalpur ground commences solely with her blessing. With the new palanquin, devotees believe her grace will continue to safeguard the peace, prosperity, and spiritual strength of the valley.
