Golden lift: Powerlifters shine at world championship in Norway
Indian powerlifters have brought immense pride to the nation with stellar performances at the World Bench Press Championship 2025, held in Norway. Athletes from Delhi and Haryana made a powerful mark on the international stage, earning accolades and lifting the Indian flag high.
Kewal Singh Pathania, team manager and vice-president of Powerlifting India, announced the achievements with pride, commending the young athletes for their unwavering dedication and exceptional performance.
In a standout moment, Lakshya Kundu secured the gold medal in the 105 kg Sub-Junior Classic category, lifting an impressive 182.5 kg. Aarush followed closely with another gold, topping the 93 kg Sub-Junior Classic category by lifting 167.5 kg.
“These young athletes have made the entire nation proud,” said Pathania, who has consistently led Indian teams to success on international platforms. “Every time I have had the honour of managing the national team, our athletes have stepped up and brought medals home.”
Pathania also emphasised the transformative role of sports in youth development, particularly in offering a positive path away from harmful influences such as substance abuse. “We want to create more opportunities like this so young people can find purpose, discipline and pride through sport,” he said.
Looking to the future, Pathania highlighted efforts to promote powerlifting in Himachal Pradesh, noting that the state government is taking active steps to improve sports infrastructure and athlete support. “With better facilities and sustained encouragement, I am confident that Himachal too will produce champions who will shine on the global stage,” he added.
