Chief Minister Sukhvinder Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today said that the state government was committed to realising the vision of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi of uplifting the weaker and marginal sections of society.

The Chief Minister along with Cabinet ministers, MLAs and party workers paid rich tributes to Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary. He garlanded a statue of Rajiv Gandhi at the Sadbhawana Chowk at Chhota Shimla.

Sukhu, while interacting with mediapersons, said that Rajiv Gandhi had laid down his life for the unity and integrity of the country. “It was Rajiv who had laid the foundation for several transforming initiatives, especially in the information technology sector, the positive outcomes of which the present generation is enjoying," he added.

Sukhu said that Rajiv Gandhi had made a provision of providing 33 per cent reservation to women in panchayati raj institutions by amending the Constitution. “The state government has introduced the Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding School Yojana to improve the standards of education. One such school will be set in each Assembly constituency. These schools will have modern facilities and other infrastructure to benefit students residing in the rural areas of the state,” he added.

He said that the state government was also implementing the Rajiv Gandhi Swarojgar Start-Up Yojana, under which the youth would be provided loans to start their own businesses. Under the scheme, the unemployed youth were also being offered 50 per cent subsidy on the purchase of e-taxis, he added.

He administered a pledge of national unity and integration of the country to all those present. Later, he paid floral tributes to the former Prime Minister at the Secretariat and administered an oath of Anti-Terrorism Day to the staff. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, state Congress president Pratibha Singh, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dhani Ram Shandil, Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh, Chairman of the HP Tourism Development Corporation RS Bali, Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan and Deputy Mayor Uma Kaushal also paid tributes to Rajiv Gandhi.
