The district administration has initiated the development of two islands in Govind Sagar Lake into major tourist destinations, aiming to replicate the model of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Initially, four small islands were identified for tourism activities. The process began in November last year but was temporarily halted due to rising water levels in the lake.

Bilaspur Deputy Commissioner Abid Hussain Sadiq said the islands would be transformed with a wide range of facilities such as hotels, restaurants, pre-wedding shoot zones, destination wedding venues, adventure sports and picnic spots. The project is expected to significantly boost tourism in the region and generate employment opportunities for local youth, promoting their economic growth.

Sadiq confirmed that the tender process has been completed and two firms have been awarded the work to develop two of the selected islands. Tourists will be ferried to these islands by boats. Eco-friendly camping sites will be established to offer visitors a unique experience, including bonfire nights.

To celebrate and promote the local culture, the islands will host cultural festivals showcasing traditional dance, music, and drama by local artists. Plans also include nature trails, hiking tracks, fishing, and angling activities for tourists. Some water-based recreational facilities, such as jet skis, cruises, and boating, have already been launched in the lake.

According to the administration, the development of the two islands is expected to be completed within the next four months, marking a significant step towards enhancing tourism in the Bilaspur district.
