The recent ban imposed by the Himachal Pradesh Education Department on creating non-educational videos reels and unnecessary social media usage on government school premises and college campuses has been praised by parents and local organisations. Parents of students in government schools and colleges expressed gratitude for the decision, stating it was long overdue to ensure a conducive academic environment.

The notification was issued on Saturday by Amarjeet Sharma, Director of Higher Education. It directed principals of government colleges and deputy directors to enforce the prohibition strictly. The circular highlighted that some faculty and staff were engaging in creating non-academic videos or using social media during school hours, activities deemed detrimental to the academic focus and holistic development of students.

“Such practices not only distract students from their educational goals but also encourage them to misuse social media platforms,” the notification stated. Amarjeet Sharma emphasised the need for a focused academic atmosphere and called for channelizing students’ energy into sports, co-curricular, extracurricular, and academic activities.

Local social organisations and NGOs also supported the ban, urging the state education department to introduce punitive measures against violators. Parents and educators believe this move will help foster a positive learning environment.
