Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur today alleged that it was due to political patronage and interference that there was no check on the drug mafia. He, however, pledged full support to the state government on the issue of curbing drug menace.

In a statement issued here, Thakur said the drug menace had spread to every nook and corner of the state and there were reports of deaths due to drug overdose everyday. “In the past one week, three cases of tragic death due to drug overdose have come to light in the state though the real number can be igher as many such cases are not reported,” he added.

Thakur said that there was no check on the drug mafia and the government had failed to curb the menace. “It is due to political interference and protection being given to the drug mafia that even the administration is not able to take stern action. Political interference has come in the way of action against the mafia,” he alleged.

He said, “Big drug traffickers and the mafia are still in the reach of the police while everyday youths are dying due to drug overdose.” He added that the authorities concerned should take a tough stand on drug trafficking as the Opposition stands strongly with the government on the issue.

“The BJP assures fully support to the government in the fight against drugs. This social evil should be eliminated from the state by launching a crackdown against the drug mafia,” he added.
