Govt orders repair of leaking water pipes in Palampur

The state government today directed the Irrigation and Public Health (IPH) Department and the Public Works Department (PWD) to repair all leaking water supply pipes in Palampur town and its satellite areas within a fortnight and send the compliance report to the Secretary, IPH Department. The Tribune had carried a news item in these columns regarding the leaking water pipes last week.

Following the government directions, Suresh Mahajan, Superintending Engineer, IPH, convened a meeting of officers of different departments in the local Municipal Council (MC) office. The Superintending Engineer, PWD, Palampur; Executive Engineer, IPH, Palampur and Thural divisions; Executive Engineer, PWD, Palampur division; president of the Palampur MC and engineers from the Military Engineering Services attended the meeting. A joint inspection team was constituted that would visit the affected areas in the next two days and later the repair of all leaking pipes would be taken up on a war footing.

Mahajan said that the government had taken cognizance of the news report published in The Tribune last week highlighting that a large number of water pipes were leaking in different parts of Palampur town.

Later, IPH Secretary Vikas Labhroo spoke to him and directed him to ensure that all leaking pipes are repaired within a fortnight. He said the Superintending Engineer, PWD, Palampur, the MES authorities and the local Municipal Council assured him of full cooperation in the repair of the leaking pipes. Teams of all departments concerned would start the repair work on October 29 and it would be completed before November 15.

Mahajan said that he would personally monitor the day-to-day progress of the work and submit a report to the government on a daily basis.
