Govt working to strengthen farmers’ economy: Horticulture Minister

Revenue, Horticulture, Tribal Development and Public Grievances Redressal Minister Jagat Singh Negi yesterday conducted a review of the ongoing activities under the newly added HP Shiva Project cluster in Khurahal village of Sundernagar area in Mandi district.

During the visit, the minister issued strict directions to officials of the Horticulture and Jal Shakti Departments to ensure effective on-ground implementation of the project. Under the cluster in Khurahal, approximately 11 hectares have been earmarked for the cultivation of persimmon (Japanese fruit).

At present, in the Sundernagar block, around 83 hectares of land across six clusters is under cultivation of guava, litchi, plum and sweet orange. With the addition of the Khurahal cluster, the number has now risen to seven clusters.

Negi stated that the state government is continuously working for the welfare of farmers and horticulturists. The HP Shiva Project, he said, is not only strengthening the economic condition of farmers but also generating new opportunities in the horticulture sector.

Explaining the cluster selection criteria, the minister informed that if farmers collectively plant fruit-bearing saplings over a minimum area of 125 bighas, the project can be implemented in their region as well. He highlighted that 104 clusters under this project are currently functional in Mandi district, benefiting hundreds of farmers.

The minister directed representatives of the implementing agency to achieve their targets on time and expedite work in autumn plantation clusters across Mandi district. He emphasised that the HP Shiva Project has helped farmers secure sustainable and long-term income sources. The project provides high-quality fruit saplings, composite fencing for cluster protection and drip irrigation facilities for each plant. Preparation of plantation beds and pits is also carried out through the implementing company under departmental supervision. National horticulture experts periodically provide technical guidance to the beneficiaries.

On this occasion, Khurahal Cluster Committee President Rajender expressed gratitude to the minister and the state government for the successful execution of the project. Other beneficiaries also thanked the government for extending comprehensive support under the scheme.

Present during the visit were SDM Amar Negi, DSP Bharat Bhushan, horticulture subject expert Dr Rajesh Sharma, departmental officials, representatives of HP Shiva Project and various implementing companies.
