Gurugram woman booked for harassing father-in-law in Palampur
She and her husband were living separately for past four or five years with mutual consent
A senior citizen of Palampur has lodged a police complaint against his daughter-in-law, who lives in Gurugram, accusing her of harassment, issuing threats and extortion of huge sums of money from him.
The Palampur police have registered an FIR under Section 308(2) of the BNS (outlines the punishment for the offense of extortion) and begun investigation.
According to a complaint filed by the 75-year-old man belonging to a reputed rich family of the area, his daughter-in-law, at present residing in Gurugram, had been pressuring him since 2022 to part with his assets. He alleged that she had been continuously asking him to transfer his immovable property in New Delhi worth Rs 15 crore in her name.
The old man told The Tribune that a few years ago, he had transferred dollars 4 lakh to her bank account for purchasing a house at Santa Barbara in the USA, along with several other amounts, to avoid harassment. He alleged that she still continued to threaten him, abused him for his old age and warned him of dire consequences if he failed to meet her demands.
He said that she sold the house in the USA, deposited the money in her bank accounts and returned to India. She first settled in his New Delhi house. Since she continued to harass him, he got the house vacated through court. Now, she was living in a posh area on the Golf Course Road in Gurugram and he was paying the monthly rent of Rs 2.15 lakh for the accommodation and also his grandson’s school fee, just to avoid harassment, he alleged.
The old man said that his son and daughter-in-law were living separately for the past four or five years with mutual consent and had never met each other during this period.
The complainant also pointed out that his daughter-in-law filed multiple complaints against him in New Delhi and Cuttack (Orissa), but the police and courts dismissed all of them for the lack of evidence. He added that the continued harassment and attempts to malign his reputation had caused him mental agony. Meanwhile, the Palampur police took cognizance of the complaint and registered a case against her and started investigation. The police said that the woman had not been arrested so far.
