Hamirpur, October 23
An engineering student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Hamirpur, died on the campus allegedly by drug overdose.
The deceased, identified as Sujal Sharma of Burmana village in Bilaspur district, was a student of MTech 1st year.
Sources said that the suspected drug peddler stayed with him at the NIT hostel yesterday and fled in the morning. The incident has exposed poor vigilance of the administration on the NIT campus. A number of students were reportedly addicted to drugs and the authorities were unable to address the issue.
Despite strict timings of the hostels, students could be seen roaming around the town even during late hours.
Superintendent of Police Dr Akriti Sharma said a case under Section 304 of the IPC has been registered and three students have been detained. She said the search for drug peddler has also begun. The body of the deceased would be handed over to the family after conducting the post-mortem examination.
