Health, Family Welfare, Social Justice & Empowerment, and Sainik Welfare Minister Dr Dhani Ram Shandil inaugurated the two-day Bhureshwar Mahadev Fair during his visit to Sirmaur district on Friday. The fair, organised at the sacred Bhurshing Temple in Kathad, began with the minister performing puja and offering prayers to Bhureshwar Mahadev, seeking blessings for peace and prosperity in the region.
Dr Shandil also inaugurated newly constructed facilities worth around Rs 10 lakh within the temple premises, including restrooms, a community kitchen (pakshala) and a clean drinking water facility for devotees.
Addressing the gathering, he said the state is a land of gods and goddesses, where faith and devotion are integral to the lives of its people. He added most traditional fairs and festivals in the state are linked to divine traditions, reflecting a rich cultural heritage that continues to give the state its unique identity globally.
Highlighting the religious and tourism potential of the site, Dr Shandil said the Bhureshwar Mahadev Temple is not only a sacred centre but also a serene tourist destination. He added the government is committed to developing such religious places as key tourist attractions, which would strengthen cultural sentiments and generate local employment and income opportunities.
The minister also inaugurated various sports competitions and traditional wrestling bouts organised during the fair, urging youth participation. He said such events provide a platform for young people to showcase their talent and stay engaged in positive activities, helping them steer clear of drug abuse.
Expressing concern over the growing drug addiction among youth, Dr Shandil said visiting spiritual and scenic places such as Bhureshwar Mahadev can help bring about a positive change in mindset and lifestyle.
He contributed Rs 11,000 from his discretionary fund to the fair committee. The temple committee also submitted a memorandum of demands to the Minister. During the event, several retired soldiers met Dr Shandil and interacted with him.
