Sirmaur district witnessed widespread disruption in normal life today following intense rainfall from early morning till afternoon. While minor landslides occurred at a few locations along the under-construction National Highway 707, traffic on the main route remained largely unaffected.
In view of the red alert issued by the Meteorological Department, DC and chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, Priyanka Verma had ordered the closure of all government and private schools across the district as a precautionary measure. The decision, made late last night, aimed at ensuring the safety of students and staff.
The heavy downpour led to a sharp rise in the water levels of local rivers and rivulets. The opening of gates at the Asan barrage caused a temporary surge in the Yamuna, though its water level remained below the danger mark by the time rainfall subsided in the afternoon. Divers have been deployed at the Yamuna Ghat in Paonta Sahib to prevent any mishap due to public negligence.
Arvind Sharma, Superintending Engineer, Public Works Department, said traffic is running smoothly on all major roads across Sirmaur district. However, 70 rural and connecting roads were blocked due to landslides triggered by the heavy rain. Of these, 43 roads have already been cleared for traffic, and restoration work is underway on the remaining 27 roads with efforts to reopen them at the earliest.
Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Verma has instructed all SDMs, Tehsildars and Naib Tehsildars to remain vigilant and ensure timely response in case of any emergency. So far, no reports of damage to life or property have emerged from any part of the district.
The administration has appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and to stay alert. For emergency assistance, the public can contact the District Disaster Management helplines at 1077 or 112.
An advisory has also been issued for tourists visiting Sirmaur during the monsoon, urging them to avoid landslide-prone and flood-sensitive areas. Tourists have been asked to stay informed about weather conditions, avoid venturing into riverbanks or high-altitude terrains during rains, and strictly follow directions issued by the local administration.
