Shimla, July 30
There’s a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in at least six districts over the next three days, starting from tomorrow.
The weather department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next three days at isolated places in the districts of Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Sirmaur, Solan and Una. The precipitation is likely to continue until August 5, though the intensity and distribution of precipitation is likely to decrease after August 2.
The department has warned against localised flooding of roads, waterlogging in low lying areas and closure of underpasses, mainly in the urban areas of the higher region. The occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall is also likely. Besides, the disruption of traffic in major cities due to water logging is also likely, which can lead to the increased travel time. There could be a minor damage to kuchha roads, and vulnerable structures and landslides and mudslides. As per the department, the heavy to very heavy rains could cause damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation.
The department has advised people to check for traffic congestion on the route before leaving for their destination, and to follow traffic advisories in this regard. People have been advised to avoid going to areas that face the water logging problems.
Meanwhile, light rainfall was witnessed in a few parts of the state. According to Meteorological Centre, Shimla, in the past 24 hours, Una recorded 60.2 mm of rain followed by Sarahan and Rohru (12 mm each), Sangrah (10 mm), Jogindernagar (8 mm), Sainj (6.5 mm), Manali (6 mm), Rampur (5.8 mm), Dharamsala (5.4 mm) and Gohar (5 mm).
Official data recorded until Tuesday evening showed rain-related incidents have claimed 65 lives in the past one month since the onset of monsoon on June 27. The state has suffered losses to the tune of Rs 433 crore in the ongoing monsoon, according to the state emergency operation centre.
Currently, 67 roads in the state are closed for traffic. Most disrupted roads fall in the Shimla zone, where 34 roads are obstructed. As many as 17 roads are obstructed in Mandi zone, while 11 roads are obstructed in Hamirpur zone. (PTI inputs)
