Shimla, February 5
Some places in Shimla district, Kullu and Chamba received heavy snowfall while most places across the state recorded moderate to heavy rainfall since Sunday evening. The latest precipitation has led to a substantial increase in the number of blocked roads and disrupted transformers. As per the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), the count of blocked roads has risen to 675 and that of the disrupted distribution transformers to 1,416. As many as 52 water supply schemes are also affected.
In Kinnaur district, the road remained closed for several hours near Maling Nala, along the Tibet Autonomous Region today as huge boulders rolled down the hill last night. The BRO staff removed the boulders from the road to ensure resumption of vehicular movement on the road.
Surender Paul, Director, Meteorological Centre, Shimla, said that places like Khadrala and Narkanda in Shimla district, Manali in Kullu district and a few places in Chamba received good snowfall over the last 24 hours. “Besides, most places across the state, particularly in Mandi, Hamirpur, Bilaspur and Solan received light to moderate rainfall,” he said.
Thankfully, the six-day long precipitation spell that started on January 31 is likely to end tomorrow. “From tomorrow onwards, weather will clear up and remain generally dry in the state over the next 4-5 days,” said Surender Paul, Director, Meteorological Centre, Shimla.
The Director further said that a couple of more precipitation spells are expected later in the month. “Unlike January and December, February will see normal precipitation. There will be one or two more spells of precipitation this month,” he said.
Following the long precipitation spell, farmers and fruit growers have heaved a sigh of relief. “We could not add fertilizers and manure due to dry spell. Also, the new planation had to be put on hold. Now, we can resume our normal work and hope for a good crop,” said an orchardist from Kotkhai. Besides, the footfall at tourist places has increased across the state.
