Jitendra Prasad, VSM, Chief Engineer Project Yojak of BRO along with Major Arvind, Officer Commanding 126 RCC, visited the Shinkula Pass on Wednesday and flagged off a heavy vehicle convoy through the pass on the strategic Darcha-Padum-Nimmu road. This road connects Himachal with the union territory of Ladakh.
Tunnel to ensure all-weather link
- The BRO is planning to construct a 4.25-km tunnel beneath the Shinku La to ensure all-weather connectivity on the Darcha-Padum-Nimmu road in near future.
- The movement of heavy vehicles on this road would help the BRO in transporting necessary material for the construction of the tunnel.
“With the plying of heavy vehicles through the pass the BRO has achieved another milestone. Heavy vehicles plied through the pass for the first time,” said a BRO official. However, the movement of heavy vehicles of only BRO and Army would be allowed on this route.
“Now, with heavy vehicles plying through the pass, the economy of Zanskar will see improvement and ease the life of people living there,” he added.
“Shinkula Pass will be beautified to attract tourists. A BRO Cafe will be made and on request of the people of Zanskar, while stupas will be constructed close to the pass,” he added.
The Chief Engineer lauded the efforts made by ‘Karmayogis’ of 126 RCC as they worked in extended hours amidst cold and harsh weather conditions at an altitude of 16,580 ft to complete the task of road widening in the area for smooth movement of heavy vehicles within four days.
