In an advisory issued today, authorities in Kullu and Mandi districts have warned residents and tourists in the Kullu and Mandi districts to avoid venturing near riverbanks due to a significant increase in water discharge from multiple dams.
Following a sudden rise in water flow in the Jeeva Nala, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has announced that approximately 400 cumecs (cubic meters per second) of water will be released from the Parvati-III dam into the Sainj river.
This measure, taken to manage the increased inflow, is expected to cause a sharp rise in the river’s water level.
Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan stated that cloudburst activity reported in the Sainj Valley has made the situation grave. In response, the Pandoh Dam authorities in Mandi district will open its spillway gates, releasing more water downstream into the Beas river.
This action will result in surge in the river’s flow, raising concerns about potential flooding and safety risks in the downstream areas in the district.
“The NHPC has urged locals and tourists to keep a safe distance from all riverbanks in Kullu and Mandi to avoid any untoward incident.
The advisory aims to prevent accidents or casualties due to sudden water surges,” the DC said.
“Emergency services remain on high alert and district authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Public cooperation is vital during this time to ensure safety and prevent mishaps,” he remarked.
