Hemchand’s silver triumph at Olympics World Winter Games elevates India’s spirits

In a remarkable display of talent and determination, Hemchand from Ramadhaun of Nahan in Sirmaur district, clinched a silver medal in the Novice Giant Slalom Final at the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2025. This significant achievement not only highlights Hemchand’s dedication but also underscores India’s growing prominence in winter sports.

Competing in Bardonecchia, Hemchand’s performance was part of a stellar opening for the Indian contingent, which secured a total of four medals on the first day: two golds and two silvers in snowboarding events.

His compatriots, Bharti and Sameer, each earned gold medals, while Harshita Thakur joined Hemchand in bringing home silver, showcasing the depth of talent within the team.

The Special Olympics World Winter Games 2025, held in Turin, Italy, have brought together approximately 1,500 athletes with intellectual disabilities from 102 countries, competing across eight sports

disciplines. The Indian delegation, comprising 30 athletes and 19 support staff, has demonstrated exceptional skill and sportsmanship, reflecting the nation’s commitment to inclusivity and excellence in sports.

Hemchand’s journey to the podium has been met with widespread acclaim. Yashpal Sharma, up-pradhan of Ramadhaun Gram Panchayat, expressed immense pride, stating, “This is not just a proud moment for our panchayat but for the entire district. Hemchand has made all of us proud.” He also extended heartfelt congratulations to Hemchand’s parents for their support.

Ruchi Kotia, principal of Aastha Special School, where Hemchand is a student, lauded his perseverance, remarking, “Hemchand’s hard work and determination have proven that talent knows no boundaries. His victory is an inspiring moment for the entire nation.”

The celebrations in Himachal Pradesh reflect the collective joy and pride of Hemchand’s community. His accomplishment not only elevates India’s stature in international winter sports but also reinforces the message that with dedication and support, barriers can be overcome, and dreams realised.
