Heritage meets sustainability: Himachal’s first zero-waste tribal fest at Keylong begins from tomorrow
In the heart of Lahaul’s rugged mountains, Keylong is gearing up for a festival like no other. From August 14 to 16, Himachal Pradesh will host its first-ever Zero Waste Tribal Festival, weaving together the colours of culture with the green threads of sustainability.
The event will strictly ban plastic bottles and disposable cutlery. Instead, pattal (leaf plates), biodegradable spoons and reusable cups will take centre stage, while water stations with regular quality checks will ensure safe and sustainable hydration. Cloth banners will replace plastic and clearly marked bins for waste segregation will dot the festival grounds, turning every visitor into a partner in protecting the Himalayas.
This eco-conscious celebration is being organised by the Lahaul and Spiti district administration in collaboration with Healing Himalayas and Saahas NGOs, both champions of waste management and sustainability education.
“This is more than a cultural gathering—it’s a promise to preserve both our traditions and our environment,” said Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana.
A highlight of the festival will be the ‘Heritage Echoes Pavilion’, an immersive space where the living traditions, crafts and flavours of tribal communities come alive. Visitors can savour authentic tribal delicacies reimagined with global twists, making each bite a taste of heritage.
