The BSL canal in Sundernagar of Mandi district has witnessed significant silt accumulation this year. The accumulation of silt has been attributed to a snag in the flood gates at the Pandoh dam during the rainy season last year.

The Pandoh dam, a crucial water source for the BSL canal, faced issues during the last rainy season, causing an unexpected build-up of silt in the canal. Official sources confirmed that the accumulation of silt is a result of this snag, which prevented proper flow of water, leading to the sediment settling within the canal.

The BSL canal plays a vital role in the irrigation and water supply systems of the region. Poor flow of water caused by the silt poses a serious concern for local agriculture and water distribution. However, authorities from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) have assured the public that steps are being taken to resolve the situation.

According to Chander Mani Sharma, XEN, BBMB, at Sundernagar, machinery for the removal of the silt is only allowed during the rainy season and the clearance operation will be conducted accordingly.

To address the silt build-up, the BBMB authorities have developed designated dredging sites in Sundernagar region. These sites will serve as the focal points for the removal of silt from the canal. Dredging operations are scheduled to begin during the upcoming rainy season.

The dredging process is expected to improve the water flow in the canal, ensuring a steady and efficient supply to local farmers and residents who rely on the BSL canal for their water needs.

While the situation remains a concern for local communities, the authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to resolving the issue at the earliest possible time. The silt removal is expected to take place in phases, with regular monitoring to ensure the effectiveness of the operation.

Rohit Debey, Superintending Engineer of the Jal Shakti Vibhag, Sundernagar, stated that silt accumulation in the BSL canal affected drinking and irrigation water supply schemes.
