Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has stressed the need for a large-scale de-addiction centre in the state, urging the government to take concrete steps towards its establishment. He called upon the citizens to remain as vigilant as soldiers, ensuring that drugs do not enter their homes and communities.

The Governor was speaking as the chief guest at the Kisan Mela & Drug Eradication Awareness Camp organised at the Khairi Research Farm under the Regional Horticulture Research and Training Centre, Dhaula Kuan, in Sirmaur district. The event was a collaborative effort by Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni (Solan), and ICAR - Central Cattle Research Institute, Meerut. On this occasion, he inaugurated the Khairi Research Farm and flagged off a drug awareness rally led by students, marking the beginning of a renewed commitment to the fight against drug abuse.

During his address, the Governor highlighted the extensive anti-drug campaign being carried out across Himachal Pradesh. He stressed that the movement’s success hinges on the participation of all sections of society, as enforcement alone is not enough; rehabilitation and corrective measures are equally crucial. He made a special appeal to Panchayati Raj institutions and women to play an active role in ensuring that the campaign reaches every household.

In a significant announcement, Governor Shukla declared that from the next academic session, every university student in Himachal Pradesh would be required to sign a pledge against drug consumption. He warned that if any student is found engaging in substance abuse, their admission would be revoked. This initiative aims to instill a sense of responsibility and accountability among young people, ensuring that educational institutions remain free from the menace of drugs.

Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the state government launched the Nasha Mukt Himachal Abhiyan, a comprehensive campaign against drug abuse. The Governor admitted that the initiative faced challenges in its initial stages, but positive results are now beginning to emerge. He stressed that this campaign will only succeed if teachers, parents, and youth actively participate.

He further emphasised that drug addiction is not just an individual’s struggle but a societal issue that impacts families and entire communities. In rural areas, where livelihoods depend largely on agriculture and labour, substance abuse not only affects economic stability but also weakens the social fabric.

The event also served as a platform to honour progressive farmers for their contributions to agriculture. Several university publications related to farming and horticulture were launched, further strengthening the support for the agricultural community. The Governor witnessed a presentation by the Sirmaur district administration detailing the ongoing efforts against drug abuse and interacted with “Namo Drone Didi” Parmjeet Kaur, recognising her innovative contributions to the community.

In a symbolic gesture promoting environmental conservation, the Governor planted Rudraksha and Sindoor trees within the research centre premises. His commitment to holistic development—combining social awareness, education, and environmental sustainability—was evident throughout the event.

The event featured a powerful theatrical performance by students from Himalayan Institute, Kala Amb, depicting the devastating consequences of drug addiction. In a deeply moving moment, mathematics teacher Anup Mittal shared his personal journey of overcoming addiction, inspiring attendees with his resilience and determination.

The event marked a significant step towards a drug-free Himachal Pradesh, reinforcing the collective commitment of the government, educational institutions, law enforcement and communities. Governor Shukla’s proactive approach and the dedication of various stakeholders signal a hopeful future where awareness, prevention, and rehabilitation efforts work together to eradicate drug abuse from the state.
