District and Sessions Judge Arvind Malhotra on Tuesday sentenced a Kasauli resident and Home Guard Bhupender Kumar to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on him for attempting to kill his wife and breaking into her house.
District Attorney Sanjay Pandit said Kumar, who had got married to Suman in 2010, often misbehaved with Suman and beat her up under the influence of alcohol. They would often have arguments as Kumar forced Suman to live with her mother, Pushpa. On July 10, 2020, Kumar reached Pushpa’s house while on duty in uniform, armed with his official gun. In an inebriated condition, he furiously asked Suman to open the door, and when she refused do so, he started firing and after breaking the door, entered the house. Though Pushpa, Suman and her children took refuge in a room, a bullet hit Suman near her heart, leading to critical injuries. Kumar had used Naresh Dutt’s car to reach Suman’s house. Although Dutt was implicated in the case as an accused for common intention, he was acquitted due to insufficient evidence, said the District Attorney. — TNS
