Himachal names public admn institute after ex-PM Dr Manmohan Singh
As a mark of respect to the economic expertise and able leadership of Dr Manmohan Singh, the Himachal Government today renamed the Himachal Pradesh Institute of Public Administration (HIPA) at Mashobra, near here, after the former Prime Minister.
“It was solely due to the wise economic policies pursued by Dr Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister that India overcame the economic crisis, a global phenomena at that point of time,” said Sukhu. He said it was most appropriate to rename HIPA after the former Prime Minister, who laid foundation for India becoming a leading world economy.
The HIPA, located at Fairlawn, Mashobra, about 12 km from here, was set up on January 1, 1974. The HIPA imparts training to officers not just from Himachal but also some other organisations.
Sukhu said this is a befitting tribute to the former Prime Minister on a day when HIPA is celebrating its 50st foundation day. “The world admired his fiscal wisdom as Dr Manmohan Singh in his capacity as Finance Minister led India on the path of prosperity when the world was grappling severe economic crisis and India’s gold was being mortgaged abroad,” he said.
Sukhu said Dr Manmohan Singh was a world renowned economist and remained RBI Governor before assuming the office of the Finance Minister. “Here at HIPA, all IAS and Himachal Administrative Service (HAS) officers get training to formulate policies for the welfare of the common people. As such we have decided to rename HIPA as Dr Manmohan Singh Institute of Public Administration,” he said.
HIPA was set up in a building which was got constructed by R Dixon, from the Foreign Office of the British India. Later, this building was purchased by Nawab Muzaffar Ali Khan Quizzalbash of Malerkotla. The property located amidst luxuriant laws and serene surroundings became the property of the Government of Punjab after the migration of the Nawab to Pakistan. Following Punjab Reorganistaion Act, 1966, the property was transferred to the Himachal Government.
