In a remarkable step towards sustainable and durable road infrastructure, the Public Works Department (PWD) has commenced the construction of Shillai Assembly constituency’s first road using the full depth reclamation (FDR) technique. The project, spanning approximately 28 km from Kaffota to Jong in the Trans-Giri region of Sirmaur district, marks a significant shift in road construction practices in the state.

A successful trial of the FDR technology has already been conducted over a 100-metre stretch in Kaffota. This advanced method of road construction not only ensures environmental conservation but also results in roads that are stronger, more durable and faster to construct compared to conventional methods.

The FDR technique involves recycling the existing road material by mixing it with specific chemicals and cement. This mixture is then used to reconstruct the road, eliminating the need for charcoal and gravel. The absence of these materials makes the process eco-friendly while also reducing the environmental footprint of road construction. Moreover, roads built using this method are significantly more robust and sustainable than those constructed with traditional asphalt-based methods.

The process eliminates the use of charcoal and gravel, reducing carbon emissions and preserving natural resources. Roads can be constructed in a shorter timeframe and at a lower cost compared to traditional methods. The roads are more resilient to weather conditions and wear-and-tear, ensuring a longer lifespan.

The implementation of this technology reflects Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to adopting modern and sustainable infrastructure solutions. By integrating eco-friendly methods in public infrastructure projects, the state is setting an example for other regions to follow.

The Kaffota-Jong road project is expected to bring significant benefits to the local community, including better connectivity, improved transportation of goods and reduced travel times. It also aligns with the state’s broader goals of promoting sustainable development while preserving its natural beauty.

Officials have expressed optimism about the long-term advantages of using FDR technology for road construction across Himachal Pradesh. If this pilot project proves successful, it could pave the way for its widespread adoption in the state, potentially transforming road infrastructure in the region.

The residents of the Trans-Giri’s Shillai area have welcomed this initiative, appreciating the government’s efforts to bring advanced and environmentally friendly construction practices to their area. The Kafota-Jong road is not just a local development project but a significant leap forward in sustainable infrastructure for Himachal Pradesh.
