Himachal Pradesh University to send proposal to ministry for sports academies, indoor stadiums

Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) will soon be sending a proposal for establishing sports academies and indoor stadiums at the university and colleges to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through the state government.

This was stated by Vice-Chancellor, HPU, Satya Prakash Bansal, while addressing the students at the 52nd annual general meeting of the University Sports and Co-Curricular Activities Council and fifth annual prize distribution function that was held in the university today.

Dr Bansal was the chief guest on the occasion.

“This initiative is aimed to provide indoor sports facilities for the university and college students” he added. Congratulating the students, their parents and physical education professors as well as principals, the VC said the students were talented and that the educators are instrumental in honing their skills. He emphasised on the importance of turning opportunities into achievements to contribute effectively to the state and nation.

“While not everyone may always succeed, a person’s identity is shaped by his /her character, making personality development crucial. Education goes beyond classroom learning, as it also includes learnings to promote the overall development of the students. The VC also assured the students that the duration of the training camps would be extended from five to 10 days to enhance the students’ sporting skills.

Pro Vice-Chancellor, HP University, Prof Rajendra Verma, congratulated all participants, saying strong willpower enables individuals to achieve a lot.

He said there had been a huge change in the departments of the university in the last years. He said there was an urgent need to mobilise resources to provide more facilities to the players. The Pro-Vice Chancellor said there was no dearth of sports talent in our state.

He also appealed to physical education faculty members to raise awareness about sports among students transitioning from schools to colleges and to help identify and nurture talent. He further said that support should be provided to students interested in sports to help them excel and participate in state and national sports competitions.

During the award distribution ceremony, Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Degree College of Fine Arts, Chaura Maidan was awarded the overall champion award in Youth Festival 2023-24, while Vallabh Government College, Mandi, was awarded the overall champion in the men’s category.

Similarly, Maharaja Lakshman Sen Memorial (MLSM) College, Sundernagar was awarded the overall champion in the women’s category. MLSM College, Sundernagar, also was awarded Miniature Trophy for 2021-24 for women’s wrestling and for women’s handball and Government Post Graduate College, Solan, for women’s table tennis. The sportspersons were honoured by the VC and Pro VC on the occasion.
