Himachal witnesses 9th driest November in 125 years; records 95% rainfall deficit

Himachal Pradesh has witnessed its ninth driest November in the last 125 years, with this November seeing a total of 1 mm of rain compared to 19.7 mm, which is considered normal, resulting in a massive 95% rainfall deficit. However, this year’s November rainfall is slightly higher than last year’s record of 0.2 mm (99% deficit), which was also the same amount of rain the state experienced in 2021 and 1983.

According to State Meteorological Department, all 12 districts have witnessed significant rainfall deficits. Sirmaur and Mandi recorded 100% deficits, with no rainfall (0 mm) compared to their averages of 7.7 mm and 13.4 mm, respectively. Four districts recorded 99% deficits: Shimla (0.1 mm vs 12.6 mm normal), Chamba (0.2 mm vs 34.8 mm), Hamirpur (0.1 mm vs 8.9 mm), and Kangra (0.2 mm vs 14.5 mm).

Kullu and Una saw 96% deficits, with Kullu receiving 1.1 mm vs 27.7 mm and Una receiving 0.4 mm vs 9.1 mm. Solan recorded a 95% deficit (0.6 mm vs 13.2 mm), Bilaspur (0.7 mm vs 10.6 mm), and Lahaul-Spiti (1.9 mm vs 23.6 mm). Kinnaur had an 84% deficit, receiving 2.7 mm vs 16.3 mm, making it the district with the least deficit and highest rainfall.

The state is expected to experience a fresh spell of snow and rain in its middle and higher hills on December 4-5, ending the dry spell. However, the weather is expected to remain dry across the state from December 6 onwards.
