According to a report, the victim, identified as Deshbandu from Banda village in Rakkar tehsil, had come to the office for a court-related hearing when he was suddenly confronted by Asha Devi, a resident of Dobha village in Mandi district.

Eyewitnesses said Asha Devi threw oil on Deshbandu, drenching his clothes and hair, and then tried to humiliate him by forcing a shoe garland around his neck. She allegedly slapped him several times, causing panic among onlookers.

A video of the assault that later surfaced online shows Asha Devi gripping the elderly man’s collar as a police officer and others attempt to separate them. Despite repeated pleas from the officer to “leave him,” she continues to resist before finally being subdued.

Public outrage on social media

The viral video has sparked strong reactions across social media. Users expressed anger over the attack, questioning how such violence could occur in broad daylight.

One commenter wrote, “Whatever the issue may be, who gave this woman the right to attack an old man? If the roles were reversed, it would have been a national issue.” Another user demanded, “The attacker should have been arrested on the spot.”

Preliminary reports suggest the confrontation may have been linked to an old land dispute. Sources said Deshbandu had earlier filed a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of Kangra, alleging that a local village leader had fraudulently transferred government land to a woman’s name.

The land in question, located in Chameti village, was registered under the name “Asha Devi, daughter of Bimla Devi, widow of Ramkrishna, from Ramnagar village”—a person Deshbandu claimed did not exist.

Investigators believe the woman’s outburst may have been an act of retaliation related to that complaint.

Police have taken Asha Devi into custody and initiated legal proceedings.
