HP varsity marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) today organised a district-level ceremony on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in collaboration with the Shimla district administration, aimed to promote awareness regarding the rights, dignity, equal opportunities, and overall social and educational empowerment of persons with disabilities.

In the inaugural session, Registrar, Gian Sagar Negi, presided over the programme and formally commenced the ceremony. The ceremony included cultural events, dance-dramas, motivational performances, and various activities showcasing the talents of persons with disabilities. Dean of Studies, Prof BK Shivram, graced the programme as the chief guest, while Dean Planning, Prof Joginder Singh Dhiman, attended as the special guest.

Performances by renowned folk singers Pankaj Thakur and Kumari Muskan were the special attractions.

Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) Prof Mamta Mokta, while welcoming all guests, said, “The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is not merely an event, but a symbol of sensitivity and responsibility towards society. Persons with disabilities are our collective strength — we must continue to provide them support, facilities, and encouragement to help advance their abilities and talents.”

After this, District Welfare Officer, Shimla, Kapil Sharma, presented the vote of thanks, stating, “The government is running numerous schemes for the welfare and empowerment of persons with disabilities. Our objective is to ensure that our differently-abled brothers and sisters receive complete benefits of equal rights, opportunities, and facilities. Today’s event further strengthens our commitment towards this cause.”

The event also included performances by children of Udaan School. Also, the children of Udaan School mesmerised the audience with their wonderful performances. Additionally, around 30 differently-abled students of the university also showcased their talents through various performances.

During the felicitation ceremony, the chief guest and other dignitaries honoured all differently-abled students as well as differently-abled teaching and non-teaching staff of the university. The awardees included differently-abled teaching/non-teaching staff Dr Poonam Chauhan, Pankaj Thakur and Pushpa Chandel, differently-abled students Vivek Raman Munihal, Amit Kumar, Ranjana Chauhan, Vaishali Sharma, Rahul Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, Paramjeet, Panku Kumar, Abhishek Bhagar, Vinod Sharma and Ravish.
